Actually, I added this anime to my watchlist even before it premiered, and after seeing it, it’s evident that the animation studio put a lot of effort into it. It might have the potential to become the strongest original series of the year. The animation is incredibly smooth, making it seem like they had a huge budget. The story’s premise is also quite good.
The protagonist of the story is Mizuki Mahiru, an adorable 17-year-old high school girl who has a deep passion for drawing. However, she lacks confidence due to being overly concerned about others’ opinions.
Actually, many people in real life are like that, caring about others’ opinions, worrying about what others might say behind their backs, and being very cautious in everything they do.
Moreover, there are many people who play the role of keyboard warriors in society. Regardless of whether they understand the topic or not, they always feel the need to pretend to understand and say a few words. As a result, they inadvertently cause harm to others.
When Mizuki Mahiru was very young, she was passionate about drawing. Once, a jellyfish drawing she made was selected as a mural. She was thrilled and wanted to show it off to her classmates. However, her classmates, unaware of the origin of the drawing, expressed their inability to appreciate it, finding it strange.
This incident planted seeds of insecurity deep within Mahiru’s heart. After that, she no longer enjoyed drawing. Yes, sometimes a person’s dreams can be very fragile. We often project our perceived strength onto others, but not everyone is equally strong.
For the female protagonist, it’s actually very difficult for her to break out on her own. It wasn’t until the appearance of another female lead, Hananoi Hanon, that Mahiru’s wheels of fate began to turn once again.
Once, Mahiru happened to pass by her mural and saw a singer performing nearby. Her mural was covered with posters. She wanted to intervene, but she lacked the courage to do so.

At Hanon’s suggestion, she wants to form a duo with Mahiru. It’s a great proposal, but Mahiru lacks the courage. She’s afraid to face herself and just wants to escape.
Yes, nobody likes others meddling in their lives. We always feel that others don’t understand our struggles. But do we truly understand their struggles?
Obviously, there’s a reason why Hanon chose to stop being an entertainer.
When Mahiru returned home, she looked up Hanon’s past online and learned that she was forced to retire due to a physical assault incident. Undoubtedly, there must be more to this story.
Now, seeing Hanon’s outward optimism and cheerfulness, it’s clear that she’s just putting on a brave face.
But at least she’s still holding onto her dream, rather than choosing to run away.
They meet again in front of the mural on Halloween night.
Only after understanding each other’s true pasts can their hearts truly have a chance to come together.
Hanon is the kind of person who refuses to compromise after enduring various criticisms. She doesn’t want to become a “mass-produced” personality like most people.
Mahiru is also moved by Hanon’s words and decides to rediscover herself.
And thus, their duo “JELEE” is born.
I feel like this April anime should be pretty good overall. The art style and music are both quite fitting.
